The Dying Gladiator
by/ Lord Byron

I see before me the Gladiator lie:
He leans upon his hand - his manly brow
Consents to death, but conquers agony,
And his droop'd head sinks gradually low -
And through his side the last drops, ebbing slow
From the red gash, fall heavy, one by one,
Like the first of a thunder-shower; and now
The arena swims around him - he is gone,
Ere ceased the inhuman shout which hail'd the wretch who won.

He heard it, but he heeded not - his eyes
Were with his heart, and that was far away;
He reck'd not of the life he lost nor prize,
But where his rude hut by the Danube lay,
There were his young barbarians all at play,
There was their Dacian mother - he, their sire,
Butcher'd to make a Roman holiday -
All this rush'd with his blood - Shall he expire
And unavenged? - Arise! ye Goths, and glut your ire!

The poem represents the suffering of a gladiator in his last
moments before death. Byron explains the idea of slavery at the age of the
Roman empire where people enjoy slaves' fighting. This reflects the true picture of
those people who build their empire on blood and tears.

:The First Stanza

The gladiator is telling us about his suffering by saying "I see". He
explains that through his imagination. He sees his life as a gladiator in its last moments
when leaning on his hand and accepting his death. We can see that he is not coward but
facing death with courage. His head fall and he has a serious wound and most of his
blood is coming out. He then starts to see his life passing through his eyes. The poet aims
to show us all these things in slow-motion, so we would experience the pain of this brave
man. The gladiator now starts to lose conscious and can't see well. His death is
approaching slowly. The poet uses the sign ( _ )which is a pause sign to make us stop
and imagine the whole scene. He wants us to think about the extreme suffering of
humanity when a man kills another man to entertain others. These lines represents the
description of a man while dying.

:The Second Stanza

While experiencing the previous feelings, he hears the shout of the
winning fighter but he did not consider that. He now feels something and thinks about
another. He is thinking about his past, far away from Rome. In that far away place, he
sees his lovely children playing. He remembers his wife and his peaceful life. The memory
of all these things run away with his blood. It is actually written in each drop of his blood.
The poet again uses the pause sign to make us stop and think about the misery of this
man who is taking from his beautiful life and butchered in a Roman holiday. Then, the
poet asks a question by saying is this man going to die and no one will avenge him? He
answers : you Goths come and take his revenge, show your anger and hate because
there is no one else will take his revenge.
