![]() Language is a social phenomenon which can reflect social differences. Men and women speak differently in some cases and for some reasons. You may notice that women tend to use prestigious varieties more than men. Sociolinguistic research has reported some extreme examples of this difference as a result of the theory of taboo. For example, in Zulu , a wife is not allowed to mention the name of her father in law or his brothers, and she might be put to death if she broke this taboo. Carbinian men may use words that are considered prohibited for women on their way to war. If women used these words, bad luck was considered to be invited. I think such examples reveal the ideology of the society that classifies the speech of men and women. Cheers ![]()

Assalamu alikum Reem Interesting topic
A more extreme example comes from Mauritania where couples are not allowed to call each other by their names in front of others. So, the husband refers to his wife as "She" and the wife refers to him "He" .
Not only that but also a mother should never utter the name of her eldest child only . So, she refer to him or her as
الطفل أو الطفلة
and they keep this title for the rest of their lives.
Worse than that the children call their Mom by her first name in front of old people because the word mom is an embarrassment.
strange world!!
Thanks for sharing
